About Costa Nova

Costa Nova sits on a slender barrier strip tucked between the open Atlantic and the Ria de Aveiro lagoon — a sheltered pocket of water with an entirely different character to the ocean swell outside. You're kiting inside the ria, not on the ocean. The village is unmistakable: the iconic palheiros — colorful striped wooden beach houses — line the strip and make a reliable visual landmark both on the approach and once you're on the water. The kite spot is the lagoon side of that strip. You launch facing inward toward flat water rather than rolling surf, which changes the whole complexion of a session. The Nortada — the northerly thermal that defines the spot's summer character — arrives cross-shore here, which is exactly what you want: it pushes you across the lagoon without sending you downwind into the bank behind you. This thermal builds reliably from March through September, typically running 16 to 22 knots when it's on. Tide plays a big role at Costa Nova. At low tide, the lagoon shallows right out and spreads flat — ideal if you're learning, or dialling in new moves without worrying about depth. At high tide the rideable area opens up to around a kilometre across, giving intermediates and experienced riders the room to run proper long tacks. Check the tidal schedule before you arrive; the difference between the two states is significant enough to plan your whole session around. A kite school operates at the spot, so if you're new to the area or want a local brief on conditions before you rig, that option is there. The usable kite window runs from roughly north-northeast to south-southeast (10°–170°), which covers the dominant Nortada direction well. When the cross-shore component is established, it's a forgiving setup — you drift across the lagoon with margin for error that you don't get on a fully onshore or offshore beach. After a session, the village has you covered. Restaurants include A Cave, Café Restaurante Oliveira, Canastra do Fidalgo, Bar do Guincho, and Churrascaria Frango à Angolana. For drinks and lighter bites, Assalam, Bar é Nostrum, Bronze, and Charlot are all on the strip. Camping Costa Nova is the local overnight option if you're making a multi-day trip of it. The prime window is the Nortada season — March through September. Peak summer typically sees the most consistent thermal. Outside that window the reliable cross-shore thermal is less predictable. When Costa Nova is on, it's one of the more beginner-friendly lagoon setups on the Atlantic coast.
