About Clifton Beach — Union Island

Union Island sits at the southern tip of the Grenadines chain, a compact, hilly island that punches well above its weight as a kite destination. Clifton Beach is the main riding area, tucked into the south-east corner of the island right in the village of Clifton itself. That location is a genuine perk: you rig up, session, and walk straight to lunch without touching a vehicle. Getting here takes some planning. Most travellers connect through Barbados or St Vincent to Canouan, then hop a short charter flight or take the inter-island ferry down to Union. The ferry from St Vincent is scenic but slow — budget a full day if you go that route. Once on island, Clifton Airport is minutes from the beach, and everything in the village is walkable. The riding area faces south-east, with the trade winds coming in from the east-southeast at a clean side-shore angle. When the trades are established — which is most reliably January through May — you're looking at 18–28 knots of consistent, thermal-boosted breeze. The wind tends to build through the morning as the island heats up, often smoothing into a steadier flow by early afternoon. Outside the core season it's patchier; June through August can still deliver sessions, but you'll have downtime. The big draw is the lagoon. A reef barrier runs parallel to the beach and keeps the water inside it genuinely flat — proper flat-water flat, not just "calm by Caribbean standards". It's shallow across a wide area, mostly sandy bottom with scattered coral heads, which makes it excellent for beginners and a solid freestyle playground for more experienced riders. Bring water shoes; the coral patches are real and some are close to the surface at low tide. Launch from the beach in Clifton. The sand is firm and reasonably wide, rigging is uncomplicated, and the IKO kite school operates here for lessons and gear rental if you need either. At very low water you'll walk further out before you can get on the board — not a major issue, just something to account for. Hazards: the reef downwind is the main one. Keep your position in mind, particularly if the wind softens and you lose upwind ability. The harbour to the north-west sees regular boat traffic from fishing vessels and charter yachts, so watch your drift in that direction. Moored boats in the bay add to the obstacle picture near the water's edge. Around the beach, Happy Island Bar — a bar built on an accumulated mound of conch shells out in the lagoon — is genuinely worth the short dinghy ride or knee-deep wade. Sparrow's Beach Club and Barracuda are on shore if you want to stay dry. The Local and West Indies handle sit-down meals; The Snack Shack is the quick option between sessions.
