About Saly Beach

Saly Beach is the kite stretch of Saly Portudal — Senegal's main beach resort, 80 kilometres south of Dakar on a west-facing strip of Atlantic coastline. The alignment is straightforward: the beach opens due west into the open Atlantic, and when the seasonal winds come in from the north and northwest, this is one of the more organised places in West Africa to get on the water. Getting here from Dakar means a drive south along the coastal road. Saly Portudal is a resort town with clear beach access and the infrastructure to match — you're not finding a rough track to an unmarked stretch of sand. The launch area is flat, wide, and sandy: forgiving for setting up gear, easy to walk your kite down to the water, and with enough space to work clear of swimmer traffic if you're deliberate about positioning. Multiple kite schools operate here — that's the clearest signal of what this spot offers. A functioning kite school needs consistent wind and a manageable beach, and Saly has both. The schools bring gear rental, instruction at various levels, and the day-to-day local knowledge that comes from running sessions on the same stretch of water year after year. For travelling kiters, it also means you can fly in light and sort out equipment on arrival. Le Sultan restaurant is nearby, and Saly's resort infrastructure puts food, accommodation, and supplies within easy reach of the beach. This is not a remote spot — it's a resort destination with kite access built in. The usable kite window runs 190°–350°. The main event is the NE trade wind, which runs November through March at 15–25 knots and swings through the northern and north-western quarter during the season. For a west-facing beach, those directions deliver side-to-onshore conditions — predictable angles, a manageable approach to the water, and a clear path back to the beach if something goes wrong. NW swings and the W sea breeze round out the picture and can extend rideable sessions into the shoulder period. Trade conditions at 15–25 knots are solid for most riders through the middle of the range. The flat sandy beach and available instruction make this a reasonable spot for intermediates and — with proper lessons — for those still working on their skills. Two practical notes: this is a busy resort beach, so swimmer traffic near the launch zone is worth watching before you go out; and high tide can narrow the flat launch area, so check the tide before you rig. November through March is the window. That's when Saly runs reliably. Outside that period, NW swings and the sea breeze can still produce sessions, but consistency drops.
