El Genovés sits inside the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, one of the most protected stretches of Andalusian coastline. The beach is raw and uncommercialised — no rental shacks, no lifeguards, no facilities of any kind. In their place: volcanic headlands, Mediterranean swell, and a wind window that draws expert wave riders who know to plan around the park's seasonal closure. Getting here takes some work. From San José, follow the dirt track south through the park's scrubland and volcanic terrain until you reach the beach. A standard car can manage it in dry conditions, but the track can get rough. There is no formal parking area — vehicles stop where the track ends near the beach, and the walk to the water is short from there. The shore faces southeast (135°), and the wind arc covers 75° to 195°. E and NE winds blow onshore, generating the swell that makes El Genovés worth targeting. N winds arrive crossshore. This combination — onshore wind, breaking waves, and an isolated beach with no backup — makes El Genovés an expert-only spot. Launching is active: waves reach the shoreline even during set-up, and the return to shore requires timing and confidence in the surf. There are no instructors, no rescue infrastructure, and no one watching. Come with a capable buddy. The park's nesting season rules out summer entirely. The beach closes for protected bird species during this period — verify the exact dates before you travel, as the closure timing can shift. The seasonal restriction actually works in the spot's favour: autumn brings consistent E and NE winds as weather systems push across the Mediterranean; winter can deliver solid swell; spring offers cleaner, lighter sessions before the closure kicks in again. The season window keeps crowds minimal — this is never a busy beach. Nothing is available at El Genovés itself. Bring water, food, tools, and a first aid kit. San José, a short drive back along the track, is the nearest base for accommodation and food. For a place to stay, Blanca Brisa, El Faro de los Genoveses, Dorado San José Hostal, Hotel Doña Pakyta, and Hotel las Salinas are all within reach. After a session, Cafe Bar La Almadraba, El Faro, El Palmito - Cabo de Gata, La Fabrica de los Genoveses, and Heladería Cafetería La Casa De La Playa cover food and drinks. El Genovés rewards the riders who prepare properly — right season, right gear, right company. Get those three things right and you have one of Andalusia's more memorable wave sessions.
