El Hierro is the smallest and most westerly of the Canary Islands, and La Restinga sits at its southern tip — a compact fishing village that feels genuinely unhurried in a world of kite-park resorts. Getting here takes effort: El Hierro is reached by ferry from Tenerife or by regional flight, and La Restinga is a further drive south down the island's winding roads. That remoteness is part of the deal. The riding area sits at the edge of the Parque Natural del Mar de Las Calmas, a protected marine reserve whose waters are famously clear and shallow. The lagoon inside the reserve boundary is off-limits for kiting — respect that line and you'll keep this spot open for everyone. Outside the reserve, the water is flat and forgiving, which is why the spot suits intermediates looking to build confidence without committed ocean swell. Wind comes from two directions depending on conditions. Through the season (April to September), southwest to south thermal winds typically build in the afternoon — the kind that switch on once the day heats up and ease off toward evening. When the northeast trade wind is running, it wraps around the southern tip of the island and arrives cross-onshore, giving a different angle but still workable for most sessions. This is a spot for smooth riding rather than heavy conditions, which matches the flat-water character of the area well. The village itself is genuinely small — a handful of streets, a harbour, and a community that's more fishing than tourism. You'll find places to eat and rest without difficulty: Casa Juan, El Refugio, Bar Mar de Las Calmas, and Amore Mio are all close to the waterfront, with Bar Principal handling the café stop. If you're staying overnight — which makes sense given the travel involved — Apartamento El Aleph, Apartments Los Saltos, and El Matel are accommodation options in the village. Watch the reserve boundary carefully before you rig, and check the shallows — the flat water that makes this spot approachable also means you can be closer to the bottom than you'd expect. Give yourself a clear downwind exit before you unhook anything. The local community here isn't built around kitesurfing tourism, so operate accordingly: low-key, considerate, and leave the place as you found it. Come for a legitimate off-the-beaten-path session in clear Atlantic water, a village dinner afterward, and the quiet satisfaction of riding a spot most kiters have never heard of. Season runs April to September; afternoons are typically your window.
