About L'Escala · Empúries

L'Escala sits at the southern edge of the Golf de Roses bay, on one of the most historically loaded stretches of coastline on the Costa Brava. You rig up within sight of Empúries — the ancient Greek and Roman town whose columns and foundations are still being excavated a short walk from the waterline. It's an unusual backdrop for a kite session, and one that tends to leave an impression. The kite zone is at the south end of Empúries beach, deliberately positioned clear of the active archaeological dig area. Keep this in mind when you're choosing your launch: the southern section is where you want to be, and that's where you'll find enough sandy beach to rig comfortably and walk in without getting in anyone's way. The beach is long, so lines-out is straightforward. Two winds dominate here. The Tramuntana — a northwesterly — wraps around Cap de Creus and arrives onshore at this bay, which is what makes the setup relatively forgiving for riders who have their water starts dialled. The summer Garbí, an easterly thermal, fills in at 12 to 18 knots through the afternoon and is what most people are here for. The usable kite window runs from 315° to 135°, so both directions sit comfortably in range. The water inside the bay tends to run flatter than the more exposed Costa Brava spots nearby, which is part of what makes this work for intermediates. That said, the Tramuntana can arrive with more punch than the forecast suggests — it accelerates as it wraps around Cap de Creus, so the day can feel different from what it looked like when you left the campsite. Solid upwind ability and reliable water starts are a realistic minimum here. If you're still working through early lessons, find an instructor who knows the local conditions before committing to a solo session. After the water, the area is well set up. Bar La Playa and El Nus handle post-kite food, while Anxoves El Xillu, Bodega Els Barrils and the other bars in the area cover cold drinks. If you're staying a few days — and this spot rewards that — Càmping L'Escala and Edifici La Marinada are both nearby. The ruins themselves are genuinely worth exploring on a rest day: the coastal path around the bay makes for a good wind-down after an afternoon session. The combination of reliable summer thermals, an extraordinary archaeological setting, and a protected bay makes L'Escala a spot that earns its reputation through the full experience. Worth building a few days around if you can manage it.
