Isla del Ciervo sits at kilometre 3 of La Manga del Mar Menor — the narrow sand spit that separates the open Mediterranean from the Mar Menor, a large enclosed saltwater lagoon on Spain's southeast coast. For kiters, that geography is everything: the lagoon is sheltered, consistently flat, and largely immune to the swell that complicates spots on the open coast. It has earned a reputation as one of the more forgiving setups in Spain, and the reputation holds. Getting here from Alicante Airport takes roughly 1.5 hours — mostly straightforward driving until La Manga itself, where the strip narrows into a long beach-town corridor. The launch is on the lagoon-facing (western) side, beside Isla del Ciervo. Before you rig anything, walk the shoreline: there are stones and bricks along the waterline that can catch you out on a rushed launch, and underwater mooring posts lurking in the shallows. This is not a clean sandy beach entry — a slow reconnaissance walk before every session is essential, not optional caution. Once you are on the water, the lagoon delivers. It is genuinely flat — not 'flat for a coast' flat, but glassy and consistent in a way that only an enclosed body of water produces. It is shallow enough that beginners can walk back in if something goes wrong, which takes a significant amount of stress out of learning. The primary wind is a SW thermal that typically runs April through July, blowing onshore into the lagoon in the 10–20 knot range — well suited to bigger kites and lighter riders. NE wind also falls within the usable arc and can produce decent sessions too. For anyone learning or consolidating skills, this is a strong choice. Aloha Kitesurf School, Aqualamas kitesurfing school, and Kitesurf Center La Manga all operate in the area, offering lessons and rental gear. More experienced riders often use it as a low-pressure training ground for technique work — transitions, body dragging, jibe practice — rather than the headline stop of a kite trip. Off the water, the strip handles itself. Bar Los Ponys and La Kovbasá are solid for a post-session drink, while Chiringuito Dos Mares Beach Club, Emporio, and La Mestiza cover food. Camping Mar Menor is the practical choice for a longer stay. Best time to come? May and June hit the sweet spot — the SW thermal is reliably firing and the crowds have not fully arrived yet. By August, La Manga fills up; the sessions are still there, but the margins get tighter.
