It's a wide, flat sandy beach backed by a substantial pine forest — one of the more distinctive coastal landscapes in the Alicante province, where the trees run right to the dune line and give you a clear reference point from the water. The dominant wind here is the Levante, the classic Mediterranean east-to-northeast sea breeze that defines this stretch of coast. It blows onshore — which is both the attraction and the thing to keep in your head when you're setting up. Spring and summer are when the Levante really establishes itself, building through the morning and typically peaking in the afternoon. The usable wind arc runs from north through east to roughly southeast (355° to 125°), so you're working with a predominantly easterly window. Getting here is straightforward — Guardamar del Segura has solid town infrastructure. Parking can be busy in high season when the beach draws its share of swimmers and sunbathers, so arriving earlier in the day is worth it if you want a clear launch zone. The beach is wide enough that you generally have room to rig without crowding, though this shifts with the season. Launching into onshore wind takes attention. Rig well back from the waterline, walk the kite down once it's flying, and stay clear of swimmers — they share the beach particularly in summer. The sandy bottom in the shallows is forgiving, but onshore conditions mean you need a solid water start and the ability to work upwind before you commit: drifting here means drifting back to the beach behind you. The riding is typically Mediterranean — cross-onshore to onshore angles, moderate chop when the Levante is properly on, and flatter water in lighter conditions. It suits riders who are comfortable self-launching and can handle brisk onshore flow. Intermediates with their upwind and water relaunch sorted will enjoy what this spot delivers. Beginners should have supervision. For food and drinks, the strip around the beach covers the bases well. Cafetería Cutillas, Ina Expresso, El Pica, Bollywood, and Cocedero Marisquería Aguamarina handle the café and snack side. The pine forest backdrop makes Playa de la Mata a genuinely pleasant place to spend a day even when the wind is off — but when the Levante switches on through spring and summer, this beach delivers a reliable, accessible session on Spain's southern Mediterranean coast.
