Puerto de Güímar sits on Tenerife's quieter east coast, a stretch of island that most kiters drive straight through on their way to El Médano. That's exactly why Flashpoint Beach — the local name for the kite area here — is worth knowing about. When the southern spots are packed or maxed out, this east-facing beach catches the same NE trade winds that power the whole island, typically delivering cross-onshore conditions and a noticeably quieter launch. The beach sits just off the coastal road near the port of Puerto de Güímar, a small town with a working harbour and a more functional, less tourist-polished feel than the southern resorts. The volcanic coastline is raw and unhurried. Crowd pressure is a fraction of what you find further south, which is most of the appeal. The NE trade wind hits the east-facing beach at a cross-onshore angle — the wind carries an onshore component, which is the more forgiving side of cross-shore. If you drop the kite or lose control, the wind works to push you back toward the beach rather than out to sea. The usable kite window runs from around 20° to 180°, giving you a wide directional band. Water conditions range from flat to choppy — freeride and cruising territory rather than a wave venue. That said, this isn't a beginner's spot. The entry has rocks that need careful navigation. Walk the beach before you rig, wear water shoes, and pick a launch line that avoids the rocky sections. Once you're in and clear, the water opens up and the conditions are manageable. Intermediate riders tend to feel at home here: reliable trade wind, workable water state for practising transitions and building technique, without the noise and congestion of El Médano. There's no visible kite school or rental setup at the beach, so arrive self-sufficient with your own kit and safety gear. For food and a drink after the session, the town delivers. Bar las Pirámides, Bar X, and Cafetería-Tasca El Callejón handle café and post-session needs. For a proper meal, El Carretón, Don Pomodoro, El Perenquén Glotón, La Encina Parrandera, and Pizzeria & Burgers offer options nearby. If you're staying overnight, Casa Rural Tato and Hotel Rural XQ Finca Salamanca are the local choices — rural in character, which suits the low-key feel of this end of the coast. Puerto de Güímar won't top the itinerary for most Tenerife kite trips, but as a quiet east-coast alternative when the south is overcrowded, it earns its spot.
