Ses Illetes sits at the northern tip of Formentera, where a narrow sandbar stretches toward the uninhabited island of S'Espalmador across a shallow channel. The setting is almost absurdly beautiful — turquoise water over white sand, posidonia meadows visible through the clarity below your board — but the spot comes with a firm seasonal window that you need to respect. The sandbar itself is the launch zone, oriented with a shore normal pointing northeast. From spring onwards, a thermal E/NE wind builds across the Balearics, and here it arrives slightly offshore — which is what creates the mirror-flat water surface that makes this place special. When conditions line up in March through May, you're riding over water that looks more like a millpond than open sea, and the smoothness of it can feel almost surreal. Getting here from Formentera's ferry port at La Savina, you head north along the western coast toward the natural park boundary. The road narrows as you approach the beach area; parking is limited and fills quickly even in the shoulder season, so arriving early pays off. The walk out to the northern sandbar from the beach access point is short. The wind arc runs from 345° through to 105°, keeping the northwest-through-east quadrant open. E/NE thermal winds in the 8–18 knot range are typical for the spring window, and because the wind angles slightly offshore from this shore, the water stays flat — choppy conditions here are the exception rather than the rule when the forecast is right. This is an intermediate-to-advanced spot. The shallow water looks forgiving but the slightly offshore angle means that if something goes wrong — gear failure, getting overpowered — you're drifting away from shore. Self-rescue skills and honest gear judgment are non-negotiable. The channel between the sandbar and S'Espalmador also carries boat traffic in the warmer months, so awareness of what's around you matters. The seasonal restriction is hard. June through September, kiting is strictly forbidden here to protect the posidonia seagrass meadows and to keep the beach accessible during the tourist season. The posidonia is part of what makes the water this clear, so this isn't bureaucracy to work around — respect it. The one facility right at the spot is El Ministre, a restaurant that makes the early-season session easier if you need food or a coffee after coming off the water. For gear shops, accommodation, or ferry connections, you're heading back toward La Savina or Sant Francesc. If you're planning a Formentera trip around kiting, March through May is the window: the thermals are building, the beach isn't overrun, and you can legally ride this stretch. A session on a light E/NE wind over that flat Balearic water is the kind of thing you come back for.
