About Somo · Playa de Somo

Playa de Somo sits on the Atlantic coast just east of Santander Bay in Cantabria — one of northern Spain's more accessible wave kite spots. The beach faces open ocean with a wide sandy stretch, a shallow intertidal bar along the shoreline, and enough room to operate properly when you know where to go. The kite zone occupies the left 500 metres of the beach. That boundary matters: the central section is shared with swimmers and the right side belongs to surfers. Arrive knowing which end is yours and things stay civil both on the sand and in the water. The setup area is on the beach itself — manageable on a calm day, but this is an exposed Atlantic shore, so a helper or a well-practised self-launch is worth thinking through before you show up solo. Wind here is primarily a thermal from the northeast, typically picking up from around 14:00 on summer afternoons in the 12 to 18 knot range. The usable kite window runs from north through south on the eastern side — a broad arc that captures both the NE summer thermals and the northwesterlies that accompany Atlantic low-pressure fronts. In practice, the spot can deliver sessions on two distinct patterns: reliable afternoon thermals from late spring into autumn, and front-powered wind when weather systems roll off the Atlantic. The water is wave beach. Expect an Atlantic shore break, a shallow intertidal bar that can produce steeper waves when the tide is out, and conditions that shift as the tide moves. Wave riders and those comfortable with an active shore launch will find it interesting; anyone still building fundamentals would be better served at a calmer flat-water spot before taking on the bar and shore break here. Year-round access makes Somo a workable option for much of the calendar, but the reliable window runs May through October when the thermal cycle is consistent and the weather more predictable. Post-session options are close to the beach. Antomar, Bar Brigantium, La Milla, and The Tavern cover the cold drink and quick bite basics. Sidrería La Xiriga is the sit-down restaurant option if you're staying for the evening. La casita de Carmen, La taberna de Moises, and Cafetería campo de fútbol add more casual choices, so there's no shortage of places to land after a session. This is a genuine Atlantic wave spot with a dependable summer thermal and enough nearby infrastructure to make a day trip run smoothly. Intermediate and experienced riders who know their way around wave conditions will get the most out of it.
