About De Silva Windresort

De Silva Windresort is based on Sri Lanka's northwest coast, at a spot where a sheltered lagoon sits close enough to the open water to give you the wind without the ocean swell. The name on the sign is the resort's own kite school, but walk the shore and you'll find the lagoon shed operations of Kitesurf Lanka, The Rascals, and Worldwide Kite working the same stretch — plus Srilankakite a short distance away. Five kite schools in one place is a signal: this is an established scene, not a quiet discovery. The lagoon is what the spot is built around. Flat water, manageable depth, and containment from the open coast keep conditions predictable in a way that open ocean beach launches simply aren't. The sheds the schools operate from are the social gravity of the spot — you rig there, get briefed there, and watch other riders sort out the launch sequence before you walk to the water. For a first visit, this setup makes orientation easy. Getting there requires navigating to Sri Lanka's northwest coast, a stretch that involves a road transfer from Colombo or Negombo and then following the coastal route north. The final kilometres to the lagoon are easier if you've got directions from De Silva Windresort or whichever school you've booked with in advance — don't rely on maps alone for the last bit. Parking near the launch areas is informal. The wind arc at this spot runs from southerly through westerly to northerly, which means a wide range of wind directions produce usable conditions rather than a narrow window. That said, conditions vary by season and by day, and the people who were on the water that morning will always give you a better read than any app. Ask at De Silva or the nearest shed when you arrive. Skill-level wise, the lagoon is accessible. Beginners can learn here safely under instruction — the flat water and enclosed environment make the consequences of mistakes more manageable than an open coast. Intermediates get genuine mileage on the flat water for technique and freestyle work. Advanced riders can use the same space for longer sessions or freestyle depending on what the wind is doing. Facilities are well set up for a kite destination. Greenbury Kite Hostel & Restaurant and Mama's Here handle food and accommodation within reach of the water. There's a juice bar near the launch area for between-session refuelling, which matters more than it sounds after a few hours in Sri Lankan heat. If De Silva's own school slots are full, Srilankakite and the lagoon shed operators give you options. Midday heat on this part of the Sri Lankan coast is real. Mornings and late afternoons are typically the more comfortable riding windows. Sun protection is not optional.
