About Nungwi

Nungwi sits at the very northern tip of Zanzibar, where the island's headland pushes into the Indian Ocean and catches wind from two directions. It's consistently one of the windiest spots on Unguja — the open-water fetch from both the northeast and southeast leaves little to buffer the two seasonal winds as they arrive onshore. Getting there means heading north from Stone Town, Zanzibar's main hub. The approach follows a well-traveled tourist route to the northern end of the island. The water at Nungwi is notably deeper close in than at many Zanzibar spots. The practical upside: sessions here aren't tide-dependent. You're not watching a flat lagoon drain away at low water or waiting for depth to return before you can ride. The window stays consistent across the tidal cycle, which is genuinely useful when you're planning around two distinct wind seasons. The kite window runs from 325° through to 125°, covering both seasonal wind directions side-onshore. That cross-shore angle is comfortable for most riders — enough to work upwind without fighting a head-on push, while keeping the launch and landing zone manageable. Two seasons bring reliable wind. The Kaskazi blows from the northeast between December and March at 18–30 knots — the stronger and more variable of the two. The Kusi comes from the southeast from June through October at 18–25 knots and tends to be steadier. Both seasons are productive for intermediate and experienced riders who can handle the conditions. The wave environment is real. Deeper water close to shore means swell pushes through rather than breaking down on a shallow sand shelf. Nungwi is not a flat-water freestyle venue — if you want glassy lagoon conditions for technical tricks, this is the wrong spot. If you want to ride a wave face or enjoy a more dynamic session with push and movement, the conditions can deliver. The beach sees significant tourism activity — boat trips, swimmers, and resort guests all share the waterfront. Launch coordination requires attention. Scout the beach before you rig, identify clear water for your window, and stay alert to any watercraft operating in the shallower zones near shore. Food and drink are well covered nearby: Cafe Dodoki, Cafe Marhaba, Coco Cabana, Coco Snack Restaurant, Al-manna restaurant, and Changarawe are all within reach of the beach. Amaan Beach bungalow has a breakfast area for early-morning starts before a session. For accommodation, Baobab Beach Resort and Bagamoyo Spice Villa are both close options. This isn't a beginner spot. The wave environment, the variability of high-end Kaskazi days, and a busy beach environment raise the skill floor. A confident intermediate who can handle cross-shore flow, read water for wave riding, and manage kite proximity around beach activity will get the most out of it. Two reliable wind seasons, tide-independent deeper water, and genuine wave options make Nungwi one of the stronger kite destinations on the East African coast.
