About Cha-am Beach

Cha-am Beach sits on Thailand's Gulf of Thailand coast in Phetchaburi province, about 25 kilometres north of Hua Hin. The beach faces east-northeast into the Gulf, which sets up well for the Northeast monsoon season running November through February. It's a long, sandy stretch that draws a steady crowd of Thai domestic tourists — beach chairs, seafood vendors, and a relaxed coastal vibe rather than the more polished resort scene further down the coast. Getting here from Bangkok typically means heading south and cutting toward the coast — a roughly two-hour drive depending on traffic. The beach runs along a seafront road with parking generally available near the sand. The flat terrain makes rigging straightforward, and the beach is long enough to spread out without feeling cramped. The kite window runs from 355° through 155°, covering north through east to south-southeast. From November to February, the Northeast monsoon delivers wind from roughly 30–70° at 12–20 knots — a side-onshore angle off the ENE-facing beach. That's a comfortable setup: enough angle to work upwind without fighting a dead onshore, and the monsoon pattern tends to be consistent once it's established. Inside the Gulf, water is typically calm and flat. This isn't a swell beach — the Gulf's geography keeps things mellow — which makes it more forgiving than exposed oceanic spots. Intermediates building their riding will appreciate that flat water. Experienced riders in search of chop or a bump-and-jump fix may find lighter-wind days underwhelming, but in a solid 15–20 knot northeast there's genuine fun to be had. The beach is long enough to find a reasonable launch zone, though Thai domestic tourist traffic means picking your spot thoughtfully — particularly on weekends and public holidays when the beach fills up. Swimmers and beach-goers spread along the sand, so scoping your downwind corridor before you rig is always the right call. Facilities are solid. For food and drinks near the water, Rach's beach bar, Dee Beach cafe, MINI BAR MARE CAFE, and Seaside Corner Restaurant & Bar are on or near the strip. Krua Med Sai and Max Restaurant offer more substantial meals. For accommodation, Long Beach Cha-Am, Asia Cha-am, Lullaby at Cha-am, and Methavalai are nearby options at various price points. Outside the November–February window, wind gets lighter and less predictable as monsoon patterns shift. The shoulder months can throw up rideable days, but for a dedicated kite trip, the northeast monsoon season is your target. Cha-am isn't a marquee destination on the global kite circuit, but for flat-water side-onshore riding in a setting that's a bit more local and unhurried than Hua Hin, it delivers when the conditions are right.
