About Khao Lak Beach

Khao Lak Beach sits on the Andaman Sea coast of Phang Nga province, north of Phuket. The beach faces west-southwest into the Indian Ocean, and that orientation is what makes it tick for kiters: when the Southwest monsoon drives in from May to September at 200–240°, you get side-onshore conditions with 15–25 knots of consistent pressure — clean sailing wind, not the patchy thermal lift you find in more sheltered anchorages. The beach is long and considerably less crowded than Phuket's more developed coastline. That extra space matters when you're rigging — wider launch corridors, fewer tourists wandering into your lines, more room to body-drag out without obstruction. The Nang Thong Beach area forms the focal point of what infrastructure there is. Getting here from Phuket means heading north on the main coastal highway. Parking near Nang Thong Beach is generally straightforward outside the peak tourist season, and beach access is direct. The usable wind window runs 175°–335°, which covers the entire SW monsoon arc with room to spare. June through August typically delivers the most consistent sessions. May and September can be excellent but are more variable. Outside this window — October through April — the Andaman coast goes quiet; if you're coming specifically to kite, plan around the wet season. It also runs a different calendar to the Gulf of Thailand spots — those two coasts peak at opposite times of year, so if you're combining both on one trip, Khao Lak is your Andaman half. Water conditions during the monsoon lean choppy, with swell building off the open ocean. This isn't a flat-water lagoon — intermediates and above who can handle a side-onshore launch and some texture underfoot will find it rewarding. Complete beginners should look for a sheltered, instructed spot first. Check the tide before you rig; the beach narrows noticeably between low and high water, and the character of the launch zone changes accordingly. One thing worth carrying in the back of your mind: the area has a 2004 tsunami memorial nearby. Locals hold that history with real weight, and it's worth knowing the local evacuation routes before you session on any low-lying Andaman coast beach. The Nang Thong Beach strip is well served for food and accommodation. Restaurants include Coconuts Nang Thong Beach Club, Hippie Fish Beach Cafe, Gold Elephant, Leela Restaurant, KhaoLak Phu View, and The Beach Restaurant at SENTIDO Khao Lak. For sleep, Khao Lak Laguna Resort, Khao Lak Palm Beach Resort, Nang Thong Beach Resort, and Happy Lagoon Bungalow all operate in the area. There's no dedicated kite centre on this stretch — bring your own gear or sort rental before leaving Phuket.
