About Klong Prao Beach — Koh Chang

Klong Prao Beach sits in the middle of Koh Chang's western coastline, a long stretch of sand facing due west into the Gulf of Thailand. The beach runs far enough that you have room to spread out and pick your launch zone. Koh Chang is a ferry ride from the Thai mainland — once on the island, the western coastal road puts you on Klong Prao without trouble. It's one of the more developed stretches on the west coast, with resort frontage along parts of the sand. Walk the beach to find the cleanest launch window before you rig up. The feature that sets Klong Prao apart is the river mouth. Where the Klong Prao river meets the sea, a sandbar builds at the mouth, and behind that bar sits a sheltered lagoon — flat water, separated from the chop building offshore. When the southwest monsoon is running, this lagoon becomes a genuinely useful stretch for technique sessions or for riders who want a break from the open-water chop. Outside the bar, the open beach gives you full side-shore exposure and more room to run downwind. From May through October, the southwest monsoon delivers 15–25 knots side-shore to this west-facing coast. That's the window: consistent power, workable conditions, and the lagoon always available as a flat-water option. The Gulf of Thailand monsoon reverses come November — the northeast monsoon takes over and the west coast of Koh Chang goes quiet until the following May. Visiting between November and April, you'd be looking at east coast spots instead. Near the river mouth, watch for current — it runs harder after rain and the lagoon entry can become pushy. The beach narrows toward the river end, so check your launch zone at the current tide level before you set up. After your session, the beach strip covers most of what you need. Klong Prao is best suited to intermediate riders and above when the monsoon is running. The lagoon gives it more range than a straight ocean beach, but side-shore conditions and river mouth current still ask for a rider who's solid in the water. Get the timing right — May through October — and this stretch of Koh Chang delivers.
