The 5+ km-wide kiting area is sheltered by scattered islands that calm the swell while the accelerated Meltemi — amplified by thermals — arrives side-shore to side-onshore from the north-west at around 20 kt on peak days. Crystal-clear flat water, warm temperatures (June–August peak). Season April–October. Suitable for all levels.

About Ayvalık Kite Zone

Ayvalık Kite Zone sits on Turkey's northern Aegean coast, a short distance from Ayvalık town and close to the Greek island of Lesbos. What makes it stand out is the scale and quality of the water: a flat-water kiting area more than 5 km wide, sheltered from open-sea swell by a scatter of offshore islands that keep the surface glassy even when the wind is up. The launch area sits on the waterfront, and the immediate surroundings are unusually well served. Ares Cafe is roughly 87 metres away — close enough to sit, watch the conditions, and make a call before you rig. Bardak is 173 metres further along. Ayvalık Palace Hotel is essentially on the doorstep at around 20 metres. Açelya Kafe and Ayvalı restaurant are both within 600 metres. The dominant wind is the Meltemi — the seasonal Aegean thermal that arrives from the north-west and is amplified here by local thermals and the funnelling effect of the island topography. It comes in side-shore to side-onshore, which makes for clean, manageable conditions at the launch. On strong peak days it can push around 20 kt. The Meltemi typically builds through the morning rather than arriving all at once, so getting to the spot early and reading the wind before committing is time well spent. The usable kite window runs from south through west to north, covering the prevailing north-westerly direction. Flat water is the headline. The offshore islands take the sting out of the swell, leaving a wide, smooth surface across the full 5 km stretch. Jumps and transitions are easier when you're not absorbing chop between hits, and the space gives you room to set up properly. The water is crystal clear and warm, especially from June through August. In high season the lagoon is shared with other watersport users, so staying spatially aware — particularly near the launch — is important. The spot works across skill levels. Beginners get forgiving, flat water and a wind that builds gradually rather than arriving hard from the start. Intermediate and advanced riders get a large, open stretch with consistent side-onshore conditions. 81 Kite Club Ayvalik operates in the area, though they're located around 11 km from the main launch — worth contacting before you arrive if you need instruction or gear hire. For accommodation, Ayvalık Palace Hotel is right at the spot. Antikhan is around 850 metres away. Ada Camping Otel is further at roughly 8.4 km, which suits vehicle-based travellers. For food away from the immediate launch area, Ayvalıkzade is just over a kilometre and ARSLAN BEACH restaurant is around 9 km out. The season runs April through October. June through August are typically the most consistent — the Meltemi is in full effect, water temperatures are at their warmest, and daylight hours are long. Spring and autumn can deliver solid sessions but the wind tends to be patchier. Staying a few days rather than passing through gives you a much better chance of catching it right.
