About Spencer Beach

Spencer Beach sits at the northern tip of Hawaii's Big Island, near the small harbor town of Kawaihae. This is the driest, warmest corner of the island — a different world from the lush, rain-soaked east coast — and that same geography keeping the skies clear is what drives reliable wind here. The wind comes off the Kohala saddle to the north and northeast, channeled between the volcanic uplands and the ocean. It typically runs in the 30–60° direction at 15–22 knots, placing it squarely inside the usable kite window (270°–70°). These are the North Hawaiian trade winds at their most consistent — a year-round feature of this part of the coast rather than a seasonal window. When the trades are running across the Big Island's north, Spencer Beach is working. The beach itself faces north into a protected bay, which fundamentally shapes the riding. The bay's sheltered orientation keeps the water calmer than you'd expect given the wind strength — flatter than most windward Hawaiian shores and generally more forgiving for setups and launches. That combination of consistent sideshore-to-onshore trades and protected water makes this a notably approachable spot for intermediate riders who want a proper Hawaiian kite session without navigating heavy shore break. Approach from the area near Kawaihae and follow signs into Spencer Beach Park. It's a well-maintained county beach park with parking, restrooms, and shaded pavilions used by campers, picnickers, and swimmers alongside kiters. The parking is close to the beach and the launch zone is accessible without a long walk. Set up on the beach itself; the sheltered conditions typically allow a calm rig even when the wind is in the upper teens. A few things to stay aware of: the Kohala saddle acts as a natural wind funnel, and gusts can push well above the average reading when the trades are strong. The calm bay water can create a false sense of ease — get a proper read on conditions before you rig up. Food options are genuinely convenient here. Cipriano's Kitchen and the Seafood Bar are both within about 50 meters of the beach. Kohala Burger & Taco is roughly 200 meters further along. You're well looked after post-session without needing to drive anywhere. If you're building a Hawaii kite trip around Maui, Spencer Beach makes a worthwhile inter-island add-on. The north Kohala coast has less kite infrastructure than Maui's established spots, but the wind consistency and calm bay conditions make it a solid standalone session.
