Bunche Beach sits inside a coastal preserve on Florida's Gulf Coast, south of Fort Myers and across the water from Sanibel Island. The shoreline is mangrove-backed and faces out across the shallow Gulf flats — calm, protected water that stays ankle-to-knee depth well offshore. That combination of sheltered conditions and forgiving depth makes this one of the more approachable spots on the Gulf Coast, and it tends to stay quiet even when busier beaches nearby are packed. The preserve access road brings you to a parking area close to the beach. The launch is a sandy shoreline without much shore break to contend with, and the relative lack of crowds means you have room to rig and launch without the usual choreography of a busy kite beach. The mangroves behind the beach provide some wind buffer, so kiting up on the sand rather than wading out is usually the right call before getting on the water. Wind-wise, the spot runs on two seasonal rhythms. Winter brings northwest-to-north winds pushing down the Gulf — these are your more reliable, pressure-driven days. Come summer, Gulf sea breezes build from the southwest to west through the afternoon and can deliver solid sessions if you time it right. The usable kite window covers a wide arc from due south, sweeping through west and all the way to north — so plenty of directions work here. What doesn't deliver is anything out of the east or northeast, which comes off the land and tends to be light and unreliable. The water is the genuine draw. The Gulf flats here are shallow enough that a beginner can stand comfortably far from shore, which takes a lot of the pressure off learning. The flat, calm surface also suits intermediates working on technique without having to fight chop. That said, low tide exposes sandbars and reduces the riding area noticeably, so timing your session around the tides matters. The mangrove edges on either side are also worth keeping track of — they limit your drift room and are worth giving a wide berth. For food and drinks after a session, the area around Fort Myers Beach has solid options. The Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina is home to Bongo's Bar & Grill and Rae's Real Italian. Wahoo Willie's and Lah De Dah Beach Bar & Grill handle the casual beach bar side of things, and Jack's Restaurant, La Ola Surfside Restaurant, Snug Harbor Waterfront Restaurant, and The Whale fill out the broader dining scene nearby. Bunche Beach isn't a bucket-list destination kite spot — the wind is seasonal and not the kind of consistency that draws international crowds. But as a Gulf Coast flat-water session spot, particularly for learning or low-key practice days, it quietly delivers. Low crowds, easy water, and a preserve setting that keeps the experience genuinely relaxed.
