Kailua Beach Park sits on the windward side of O'ahu, on a northeast-facing bay that catches the Hawaiian trade winds head-on. The beach is one of the most consistently celebrated kite spots in the world — and for good reason. Four kilometres of white sand stretch in a gentle arc, backed by a reef that flattens the water into conditions that suit everyone from first-timers to experienced riders chasing speed runs. The NE trade wind is the engine here. It blows from roughly northeast (45°–75°), sits squarely in the usable window of 340° to 140°, and comes in side-onshore to the beach — one of the safest orientations you can ask for. Typical trade days run 18–25 knots, consistent enough to plan your sessions around and steady enough to keep your lines taut. The wind blows year-round, though the core trade season delivers the most reliable back-to-back sessions. The reef does the heavy lifting on the water: behind it you'll find genuinely flat water, the kind that lets beginners work on body drags and board starts without fighting chop, and lets intermediates focus on technique rather than survival. The water is warm — boardshorts territory — and the bay has a well-established reputation for being shark-free, which takes one thing off the mental checklist. Launch happens from the beach itself. The wide, open stretch of sand gives you room to lay out your lines, but Kailua is a popular beach and fills up with swimmers, stand-up paddlers, and families, so pick your launch window and spot with care. The side-onshore wind means a downwinder is always available if you need an out, and water re-entry is forgiving given the flat conditions behind the reef.
