About Kihei South Beach

Kihei South Beach sits on the southwestern shore of Maui, tucked inside Maalaea Bay — a very different proposition to the North Maui spots at Kanaha and Ka'a, which lie about 28 kilometres away. Where those spots catch the northerly trade wind funnelling across the central isthmus, Kihei faces west-southwest, and it's the channeled W-SW flow that drives the riding here. From April through September, the afternoon trade wind typically arrives in the 230–260° range, running 15–25 knots with reliable consistency. The bay geometry concentrates the westerly component, giving a usable kite window from 170° through to 330°. Sessions generally build through the morning and fire up properly in the early afternoon. The water inside Maalaea Bay earns its reputation for flatness. There's no ocean swell to battle — this is a sheltered stretch that suits anyone who wants to work on board technique, practice transitions, or simply clock mileage without chop fighting back. It's a meaningful contrast to more exposed Maui coastline. Kihei town sits right behind the beach and is well-served for kitesurfers. Complete Kite Boarding, Foiling, Winging and Surfing Lessons Maui is based in the area and offers instruction and local knowledge — a worthwhile stop if you're new to this specific spot. Accommodation nearby includes Aloha Aku Inn & Suites and Kamaole Beach Club. After a session, the strip has solid choices: Fat Daddy's Smokehouse and Haui's Life's A Beach for food, Kahale's Beach Club and Dog & Duck for a drink, with d'Lite and Kamana Indian Cuisine rounding out the eating options. This is not a beginner-in-week-one spot. The channeled trade wind can push through at the stronger end of its 15–25 knot range with little notice, and bay settings still have swimming areas and boat traffic that demand situational awareness. Intermediates and above who are comfortable in consistent trade-wind conditions will find it rewarding. The calm bay water removes one layer of difficulty — but it doesn't remove the need to understand what you're launching into. The wind window spans 170°–330°.
