Ocean Beach — OB to anyone who has spent time in San Diego — sits at the southwestern edge of the city where the San Diego River meets the Pacific. The Dog Beach section, at the northern end of the strip, is the focal point for the local kite community: a wide, open sandy beach with direct Pacific exposure and no reef below you to worry about. Getting there is straightforward; OB is well-connected within San Diego, and street parking is available in the surrounding neighbourhood. Weekends draw crowds early, so arriving before noon gives you a better shot at parking close to the beach and setting up ahead of the sea breeze. The wind here follows a textbook California sea breeze pattern: cool Pacific air drawn onshore as the inland valleys heat through the morning, building to a consistent afternoon flow from the northwest to west — typically 12–20 knots when it's on form. The usable kite window covers 180° through 359°, so any southerly, westerly, or northerly angle keeps you riding. When the breeze fills properly, the afternoon timing is predictable enough to plan sessions around it. Water character is open Pacific throughout: sandy bottom, moderate chop from the combined swell and afternoon wind texture, and a generally cross-to-onshore angle. This is not flat water. Expect some push from the ocean and enough chop to make jumping worthwhile. The wind angle is comfortable for water starts but demands solid upwind technique to hold position along the beach — riders who haven't sorted their upwind yet will find themselves walking back more than they expect. The kite scene at OB is established, which matters for launches and land assists. On a good afternoon you will likely find other riders who are happy to help. That said, Dog Beach means exactly what the name says: dogs off-leash, families, swimmers, and paddlers sharing the sand, especially at weekends. Managing your downwind corridor and launch window actively is not optional here. Temporary beach closures can also occur, so checking local notices before driving down is worth the two minutes. After the session, the OB strip has you sorted. Hodad's Ocean Beach is the local institution for a post-ride burger. OB Java handles coffee and lighter bites. For a beer with a view, Newbreak and Cheswick's West are the straightforward choices. Mike's Taco Club and La Doña both do tacos worth the refuel. JJ's Sports Bar, BBQ House Bar-Grill, ChickenHeadz, and OB Surf Lodge round out the options — the neighbourhood is well-stocked enough that no one goes home hungry after a session.
