Padre Island National Seashore sits on the Texas Gulf Coast, stretching between Corpus Christi to the north and South Padre Island to the south. It's a long barrier island, and that length shows on the beach: wide, open sand with almost no crowds, and an unobstructed fetch of open Gulf behind every launch. Getting here takes a little planning. The seashore is reached from Corpus Christi, and once you're on the island you'll find designated beach access points with parking. Getting your kit down to the water is uncomplicated. The beach is wide enough to rig comfortably without worrying about other kiters or beach traffic. The wind that makes this place work is the southeast, typically arriving on a bearing between 130 and 160 degrees. Relative to the beach orientation, that's side-onshore — it crosses the shoreline at an angle, keeping the wind clean and unobstructed off the Gulf while making sure any downwind drift sends you back toward the beach rather than out to sea. Spring and summer are when this wind shows up consistently, sitting in the 15 to 25 knot range on good days. That's solid kiteable wind across a broad range of kite sizes. Launching off an open ocean beach with clean southeast wind is a good recipe for a proper session. There are no breakwaters or channel entries to navigate — it's a straightforward walk to the water and onto open Gulf. The barrier island beach gives you a long run in either direction, which means you're not boxed in. One critical thing to sort out before you drive out: check which sections of the beach are currently open. Padre Island National Seashore is an active protected area, with nesting wildlife that triggers closures and restrictions on certain beach sections at certain times of year. Showing up to find your preferred access point is off-limits means a frustrating drive back out. Check current closure information from the park service before you go. Facilities on the beach itself are minimal. There is no kite school or gear shop on the island, so arrive completely self-sufficient: spare lines, pump, tools, water, and food. Services are back in Corpus Christi, so fuel up and resupply before you head out onto the island. The payoff for that self-sufficiency is real. A good day at Padre Island — solid southeast, wide empty beach, nobody in sight — has a raw, open quality that's genuinely hard to find at more developed spots. This is proper open-coast riding.
