The gorge geometry does the work here: it compresses and directs the airflow, keeping the wind direction predictable on good days. Rowena sits squarely in that corridor. Access is via Highway 30. The launch is on the south bank of the Columbia, facing north across the water. When the thermal kicks in — running roughly west to west-southwest, around 240–280° — you get a side-onshore angle from the left as you face the river. That's a clean, workable setup: walk your kite down to the bank, lay out your lines on the flat ground, and body-drag out without battling a wind that wants to push you back inland. No awkward shore break, no complicated entry. The riverbank is flat and gives you room to rig properly before you commit to the water. On the water, you're riding flat river water. There's no ocean swell, no tidal variation — the Columbia doesn't do those things. What you're dealing with is a steady downstream current and the short-period chop the wind builds on the surface. The wind arc runs 270°–90°, covering westerly through northerly directions within the usable kite window. That combination of flat water and a consistent thermal direction keeps conditions readable: you're not adding swell or shore break to the equation, which is part of why the spot works well for intermediates building confidence. Skill level: this is an intermediate spot. The flat water and thermal consistency might suggest otherwise, but you need reliable water re-launches, solid upwind ability, and the judgment to handle a river current if you lose your board or get separated from your kit. A downstream current doesn't wait for you to sort your lines out. It's approachable once you're comfortable with self-rescue, but it's not a place to be learning it. There are no listed facilities at Rowena — arrive self-sufficient with water, food, and any spare gear you might need, and plan your day from there. The spot is on the Oregon side, accessed via Highway 30. When the thermal is running well, Rowena Crest delivers a clean intermediate session: channeled gorge wind, flat river water, and a side-onshore setup that keeps the launch straightforward. It's a solid option east of Hood River when you want flat water and a reliable angle.
