The Wall at Rufus sits at the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon — a stretch of river that turns serious when the main Gorge spots are already borderline overpowered. When Hood River is sending kiters scrambling for smaller bars and the main launch windows fill with froth, experienced riders make the drive east to Rufus, where the river is still flat and the wind has room to really push. The Columbia here is wide, brown, and deceptively smooth on the surface. That flat water is the draw — there's no chop to fight, just strong, relentless current and wind that arrives from a W-SW direction, typically in the 240–280° range, pushing hard at 25–40 knots on a proper high-wind day. The Gorge thermal engine runs full tilt here, and The Wall earns its name: the wind doesn't ease, it presses. The usable kite window runs from the west around through to the east (270°–90°), so a genuine westerly or WNW keeps you in business. Conditions here are gusty — that's not a caveat, it's the defining characteristic of the spot. The terrain and canyon walls at the east end of the Gorge compress and channel the airflow in ways that make wind strength variable even when the direction stays consistent. An experienced kiter who reads the sky and knows when to depower will manage it. A rider still building their high-wind edge control probably shouldn't be here on a big day. Approach-wise, Rufus is a small town on the Oregon side of the Columbia. The drive east from Hood River follows the Gorge — the gradual shift from dense tree cover to open, arid basalt landscape signals you're getting close. This is a working spot, not a resort: parking and river access exist, but come fully self-sufficient rather than expecting on-site services. Once rigged and on the water, the payoff is real. The flat river surface allows for fast, clean riding without the wave interference that can complicate sessions further west in the Gorge. Transitions require genuine judgment — strong gusts demand active bar management and quick feet — but for a kiter who handles gusty, overpowered conditions comfortably, this spot genuinely delivers. For food after your session, Rufus has a few solid local options: Bob's Texas Steakhouse, Bob's Texas T-Bone And Frost, and the Bulldog Diner are all in town. The Wall at Rufus is not a spot to arrive at before you're ready. It's the place experienced Gorge riders reach for when everything else is too much — a high-wind specialist's playground on flat water, with the dial turned all the way up.
