Sandy Hook occupies the northern tip of a long barrier spit in Gateway National Recreation Area, pointing into Lower New York Bay where New Jersey faces Staten Island across a stretch of open water. The Atlantic Ocean runs along the east face of the peninsula; Raritan Bay sits on the west. That dual exposure shapes everything about how this place works — the two sides behave completely differently, and knowing which one to launch from, and in what wind, is half the puzzle. For NYC-area riders, this is the closest thing to accessible kite water in the metro. Sandy Hook is an easy drive from most of northern New Jersey or the outer boroughs, and the national recreation area has solid infrastructure when you arrive. Expect a vehicle entry fee at the park gate, and on summer weekends parking fills early — arriving before the beach crowd makes the difference. Horseshoe Cove sits on the northwest side of the hook, opening onto Raritan Bay. This is the flat-water side. The cove's sheltered geometry keeps chop down relative to the open ocean beach on the east face, and when conditions line up you get organised flat water with real room to build confidence. The usable kite window runs 0–180° — north through east to south — which covers the northeast winds that track through with fall storm systems. Those directions send wind crossing or slightly offshore across the bay, giving the cove its best conditions. Summer typically delivers southwest sea breezes in the 200–240° range, running around 12–18 knots on good afternoons. The SW angle sits just outside the primary usable arc, so summer sessions at the cove depend on how far the breeze actually swings on any given day. Track the direction carefully rather than assuming a forecast covers it. Fall tends to be the sharper season. Northeast winds arrive with the first storm systems of the season, fall cleanly within the usable arc, and the summer crowds are gone. Water and air temperatures drop noticeably, so a wetsuit moves from optional to standard as the season turns. Raritan Bay is an active commercial and recreational waterway. Ferry routes and boat channels run through it, and recreational traffic picks up on good-weather days. Map your downwind drift before you launch and give large vessels room. Sandy Hook is a federal park with significant shorebird nesting habitat, which means launch areas can be designated or temporarily closed during sensitive seasons. Check current National Park Service guidelines before you make the drive — it's exactly the kind of thing that catches people out on an otherwise perfect wind day. On-site, the Mule Barn Tavern covers post-session food and drinks, and the Snack Bar handles lighter bites. There's no kite school or gear hire at the hook, so arrive fully equipped with all your hardware, spares, and a pump.
