Silver Lake State Park occupies a stretch of Michigan's Lake Michigan shoreline in the Lower Peninsula. What sets it apart from a typical Great Lakes beach is the dune complex immediately behind it — towering sand hills that roll inland from the shore, giving the spot an almost desert-meets-Great-Lakes character that's genuinely unlike most freshwater kite venues. Getting here means driving west through rural Michigan to the Lake Michigan coast. The park has beach access with designated parking areas. Arrive early on summer weekends — Silver Lake draws family crowds and beach space fills up. The launch area is sandy and flat, which is good for rigging, but scope out your space early and stay aware of the general beach activity around you. The water is Lake Michigan freshwater — clear and teal-blue on a bright summer day. There's no ocean swell, but Lake Michigan is large enough to generate genuine wind-driven chop, and with an open lake fetch upwind it builds quickly when the wind picks up. The bottom is sandy and shallow close to shore, forgiving underfoot, but the lake deepens beyond the near-shore zone. Wind here runs on a W-SW summer thermal cycle. The pattern draws lake air onshore from the southwest through west — roughly the 240°–280° range — as Michigan's inland terrain heats through the day. These thermals can run 15–25 knots on a good afternoon. The usable kite window is wide, covering south through west and around to northwest (180°–359°), so you're not dependent on a single narrow direction. Afternoon sessions typically catch the strongest, most consistent flow. The dunes are the defining feature and the main variable. Spectacular from the water, but the topography creates thermic turbulence and shifting conditions close to shore, particularly near the dune face. Set up your launch and landing well clear of the dune foot. Past the shore zone, out on open water, the riding evens out into powered runs across a long upwind fetch — the kind of sustained reaching that Lake Michigan does well. Skill level: intermediate to advanced. The conditions on a typical summer thermal day aren't extreme, but the beach crowd, dune-driven wind variation near shore, and the speed at which Lake Michigan chop builds all reward experience. With a knowledgeable friend and a calm session, a competent beginner can make it work — but this is not a learner spot. No kite-specific facilities are listed at the park. Come fully self-sufficient with everything you need. Summer is the window for this spot, when the W-SW thermal pattern is at its most reliable. Outside that window, the lake turns cold and conditions become less predictable.
