West Gilgo Beach occupies the ocean-facing shore of Jones Beach Island, a slender barrier strip that separates the open Atlantic from the calmer bays along the southern edge of Long Island, New York. The approach is simple: cross the causeway from the mainland, follow it out to the island, and the beach parking lot is right there at the end. In summer expect a $30–$40 parking fee, though the lot flips to free after 5 pm — worth knowing if you want to skip the crowds or make the most of an evening session. The ocean side is the main event. East through south-southwest covers the full usable kite window (90°–270°), and SSW is the dominant direction — one that suits this exposed Atlantic coastline well. When it's on, you're riding real ocean conditions: small-to-medium swell with waves that can reach around 6 feet on a decent day. The fetch is long and the water reflects it. This is firmly intermediate-to-expert territory; you want solid kite control and comfort in breaking surf before you launch here. A set that cleans up while you're still inside the shorebreak will find you out quickly if your skills aren't there. When the wind shifts to the northwest, the session flips to the bay side. Flat, protected water with none of the ocean's swell — clean freeriding and a genuine alternative when the ocean side is too much or the forecast angle doesn't favour the beach. The dual nature of Jones Beach Island is a real asset; experienced riders factor both sides into their planning. Seasonality matters a lot here. April, May, September, and October are the months that work best — more consistent wind, thinner crowds, and a beach that's actually workable for launching and landing. Summer brings huge numbers to Jones Beach Island, and on a busy weekend the beach fills fast. Space for rigging and a clear run for launching shrinks considerably. If summer is all you have, come early or come late: post-5 pm is both quieter and free to park. No facilities are listed at the spot, so this is a self-sufficient operation. Bring water, food, tools, and anything you need for rigging. The barrier island offers little natural shelter — wind and sun are a constant presence — and an exposed Atlantic beach means conditions can shift across a session. Read the beach before you rig, and know your downwind exit before you launch.
