Laguna Garzón sits about 40 kilometres east of Punta del Este along Uruguay's Atlantic coast, right on the border between Maldonado and Rocha departments. Access runs through José Ignacio, the quietly fashionable village that puts this stretch of coastline on the radar. A narrow sand tongue called La Lengua bisects the lagoon, and that split is the whole reason this place works so well for kiting — two completely different rides separated by a short walk across a strip of sand. The inside of the tongue faces the sheltered lagoon: glassy, flat, and nowhere deeper than your waist. You can walk out a surprising distance before anything gets above knee height. That consistent shallowness is what makes it a genuine learning spot — a downwinder that ends in a fall puts you standing, not swimming. Freestyle riders get the same reward: clean pop off flat water and a forgiving landing zone. One thing to note: the lagoon's shallow, confined nature rules it out for foiling — bring a different quiver if that's your plan. The outside of La Lengua faces open water where a proper South Atlantic swell rolls in. When the wind is up and the angle is right, this side delivers proper wave riding — enough to keep advanced riders busy while beginners are lapping the flat inside. La Lengua itself makes a natural launch platform with water on both sides, so you can read conditions and pick your mood before you pump up. Wind arrives from the eastern quarter — E, NE, and SE — driven by seasonal thermals. Summer runs October through March and typically delivers three to five rideable days a week, with the thermal in the 14–25 knot range. The usable kite window spans from 340° through to 160°, meaning a broad spread of easterly and southerly flow all works here. Mornings often start light with the thermal building through midday; the best sessions tend to run from around noon into the early evening. Watch for afternoon direction shifts as sea breezes can rotate the flow. A kiteshop and kite school operate at the spot, which makes this practical for travellers arriving without full gear or wanting local coaching. Confirm current hours and availability on arrival, as seasonal operations can vary. Access is straightforward from José Ignacio village — a short drive to the lagoon edge. The village is a boutique destination in its own right: quality food and accommodation are nearby, but book well ahead in peak summer. On the water, a few minutes reading the conditions before you rig pays off — the tongue's geography creates its own micro-environment, and the better side changes with wind angle and swell.
