Punta del Este sits where the Río de la Plata estuary gives way to the open Atlantic — one of South America's most glamorous resort cities, and a genuine kite destination on the east-facing ocean side. The city wraps a narrow peninsula: Playa Mansa faces west into sheltered, flat water (no kiting), while Playa Brava opens east to the Atlantic swell and the prevailing wind. If you're here with a kite, Brava is your beach. The authorized launch zone sits between Parada 31 and 32. The Parada markers are signposted along the beachfront road, so finding the right stretch is easy. The zone is formally capped at 30 kiters on the water at any one time — a sensible limit given how many people want to fly here in high season. During January and February, the zone fills. Arrive early or accept you might be watching from the sand. The usable wind window runs from 20° to 180° — covering NE, E, and SE, which are the directions Brava catches best. The east-facing orientation means Atlantic systems deliver reliable winds in the 15–25 knot range through the October–April season. Conditions are typically best suited to intermediate and advanced riders; the shore break can become serious when Atlantic swells run, so read the water before you rig. Lighter days early and late in the season offer more room for progression riders. Playa Mansa, on the western side of the peninsula, is the flat-water family beach — no kite zone, full stop. Don't rig up on the wrong side. Kite schools and rental are within 500 metres of the launch zone, so if you need a briefing on local conditions or to hire gear, help isn't far. After your session, the beachside food scene covers the range: 481 Gourmet and Bongalouw Suizo for a proper sit-down meal, Il Mondo della Pizza and almacén de pizzas for the post-session carb recovery, El Barcito for a cold drink while the adrenaline settles, and Ill Machiato Cafe, la casita, and la picniqueria for coffee and a quick bite. Baipa is nearby if you want a bar. Kite competitions are held on Brava during the season — when events are running, the zone gets tight and the beach draws a crowd. Worth checking before you book travel around specific dates. The season runs October through April. January and February bring peak wind reliability alongside peak crowds. Outside those two months you get more space and a quieter version of the city, which is worth considering if you can be flexible on timing. Punta del Este functions as a full resort destination, so the infrastructure around kiting — food, gear, and accommodation — is solid in a way you don't always find at a raw kite beach.
