About Takara Beach

Takara Beach sits on the north coast of Efate Island, roughly 40 kilometres from Port Vila, making it the main kitesurf destination on the island. The drive from the capital takes you along the coastal road past villages and dense tropical vegetation before the road delivers you to a beach backed by a coral reef — a setting that looks almost absurdly good. The usable wind arc here runs from 315° around to 135°, and the spot is well-oriented for the SE and E trade winds that define the season. Those trades blow side-onshore at 12–15 knots from June through September, keeping conditions consistent and giving the whole window a reliable quality that travelling kiters plan around. Outside that window, winds become less predictable, so June–September is genuinely the time to be here. Inside the reef you get flat-to-chop water — warm, clear, and forgiving enough for riders still building their skills. The reef itself shapes everything about a session at Takara. It's passable at high tide, which means you need to check the tide table before you launch. At low tide, the reef becomes a real obstacle, and that knowledge should sit somewhere visible in your planning. Once you're inside at the right tide, though, you're riding a genuinely beautiful stretch of lagoon water with the kind of warmth that makes falling in feel less like a problem. For those who want to go beyond the lagoon, there's wave riding on offer when conditions align. The side-onshore wind angle means you can work both directions without spending all your upwind budget just staying in position. Intermediates through to experienced riders will find plenty to work with; the spot isn't technically demanding in the lagoon, but it rewards those who understand what the reef is doing. If you're travelling without kit or want a proper local introduction — especially to the tide and reef patterns — that's your first stop. A guide who knows this beach is worth the session fee for the reef knowledge alone. Getting here from Port Vila is a straightforward drive of around an hour north along Efate's coastal road. Parking at the beach is available. There's no extensive facility hub on site beyond what the school provides, so bring your own water and food if you're planning a full day out.
