About Los Roques Archipelago

Los Roques is a Venezuelan coral archipelago sitting roughly 170 kilometres north of Caracas in the southern Caribbean. Getting here means a small charter plane from Caracas — there's no practical boat option for the crossing — and that flight already filters who shows up. What waits on the other side is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with some of the flattest, clearest kitesurf water in the Western Hemisphere. The wind arc spans 350° to 150°, with the dominant ENE trade winds running at 15–25 knots from December through April. January to March is peak season, when the trades are at their most consistent and often their strongest within that range. The archipelago's ENE-facing open ocean exposure means full Atlantic fetch on the windward side, while the coral reef system creates sheltered lagoons on the interior — and those lagoons are what the spot is known for. Inside the reef, the water is shallow, flat and almost surreally clear. These are among the best flatwater conditions in the Caribbean; freestyle riders and those working on unhooked tricks will find long, uninterrupted runs with minimal chop. Downwinders across the lagoon systems can cover serious ground. On the windward side beyond the reef, the ocean is open and conditions step up considerably — more swell, more power, more exposure. Getting there requires forward planning. Small charter planes operate the Caracas–Los Roques route and luggage is restricted, so pack your kit bag strategically. The archipelago runs under strict environmental controls as part of its UNESCO designation, which limits infrastructure development deliberately. There are no listed facilities at this spot — no rental shops, no rescue standby. Treat it as a remote expedition rather than a kite resort. That remoteness shapes the risk profile. Self-sufficiency is non-negotiable: bring spare lines, a backup bar, pump, repair kit and first aid. If gear fails here, you're fixing it yourself. The coral reef system that creates the perfect lagoons also creates navigation hazards — shallow reef sections border launch areas and downwind corridors, and riding at speed near reef edges requires full situational awareness. Know exactly where the reef lies before you rig up. Intermediates and above will get the most from Los Roques. The lagoon conditions on lighter trade wind days are accessible, but the combination of powered ENE trades and remote location makes the spot unforgiving if something goes wrong. The season runs December to April; outside those months the trade winds become unreliable and the flatwater conditions that define the spot lose their consistency. For kiters who want something genuinely different — world-class conditions, no crowds, real wilderness — Los Roques is hard to match in the Caribbean.
