Necochea sits on the Buenos Aires Atlantic coast roughly 120 kilometres southwest of Mar del Plata — far enough from the crowds to feel like your own stretch of beach, close enough to reach on a weekend drive from the capital. Playa Norte is the northern section of Necochea's broad, open beach: a long arc of South Atlantic sand with the Quequén river mouth and its pier marking the northern boundary. The beach faces roughly east, which means the prevailing NE to SE winds come in cross-onshore — a genuinely useful angle for kiting. The usable wind arc runs from 20° through to 200°, so everything from a northerly to a south is workable, and you're not stuck waiting on a single direction to switch on. Wind tends to run in the 15–25 knot range, though Necochea doesn't have one dominant season; conditions vary across the year, so always check a forecast before you make the trip. The pier near the Quequén river mouth is the standout feature of this spot. It creates a more sheltered launch compared to the open beach further south, letting you rig and sort your lines without taking the full wind brunt in the face. Once you're rigged and in the water, heading north of the pier is the move when swell is running — that zone picks up wave action that the open beach can miss, and it's worth a look if you ride waves. The long stretch of beach south of the pier opens up a generous downwind runway and plenty of room between riders, which counts for a lot. Compared to Mar del Plata, Necochea runs noticeably quieter. You're unlikely to be dodging a crowded launch or jostling for water space, which makes it a better call for riders who like room to breathe. The flip side of that quietness is that no kite schools or rental shops are confirmed in the immediate area — arrive self-sufficient, with your own gear in order and a plan if something breaks. The water is open Atlantic: expect South Atlantic chop when the wind builds, with wave potential north of the pier on swell days. Conditions between the pier and the beach can be somewhat more manageable depending on wind angle, but this is not a flat-water lagoon — the ocean is here. No facilities are currently confirmed at the launch area itself. Bring everything you need — water, snacks, a spare line set. The town of Necochea is a coastal resort with standard services a short distance from the beach, so you won't be stranded. Access to Playa Norte is straightforward from town; local knowledge will point you to the right beach access track faster than any map.
