About Boca Grandi

Boca Grandi sits on the windward southeastern tip of Aruba, well clear of the hotel strip that lines the calm western coast. The name translates to 'big mouth' — fitting for a bay that opens directly to the Atlantic and catches the full force of the northeast trades without shelter or reef protection. White sand dunes frame the beach, lush scrub flanks the track in, and the water runs a deep turquoise that looks deceptively inviting until you notice the permanent chop rolling through from the east. Windsurfers used to frequent this stretch more often; nowadays it belongs almost entirely to kiters. The spot is removed from the popular tourist areas, so expect a quieter approach and no amenities at the water's edge. There is no rescue service operating here. Pro Kite School Aruba is approximately 230 metres from the launch — close enough to be a useful local resource, but arrive self-sufficient: plenty of water, a plan for if something goes wrong, and a solid self-rescue in your back pocket. The launch is a sandy bay, which keeps rigging and walking in manageable. The catch is the reef: scattered rock formations and reef patches are present throughout the beach break, visible both above and below the waterline, and sharp coral runs across the bottom. Take your time on the walk in, know your exit line, and plan your shorebreak timing before you commit. The wind arc runs 40° to 150°, delivering a cross-onshore angle that keeps you working away from the beach. Winds build through the day, typically picking up from around 15 knots and pushing to 25 in summer — the northeast trades are the engine, and with the full open ocean to the east offering nothing but fetch, the water stays permanently choppy. Average wave heights sit around 1.27 metres. Riding is fast and physical; the chop keeps you working and the powered cross-onshore angle means there is rarely a dull moment. On entry and exit, the shorebreak demands full attention. Boca Grandi is advanced-rider territory. Reef, rocks, shorebreak, no rescue, and raw open-ocean conditions make this a poor choice if you are still building your water confidence. The cross-onshore angle gives you some buffer — a problem sends you downwind rather than straight onto the rocks — but you need to be comfortable making decisions quickly in messy water and handling your own way back to the beach. For food after a session, the nearest restaurants — Big Mama Grill, Baby Beach Snack Bar, Lago Colony Beach Club Aruba, and Rum Reef Cocktail Bar & Grill Aruba — are clustered roughly five kilometres away. Battata Beach Bar and Terrace Bar & Cafe are further out. Bring what you need for the session; there is nothing at the beach itself.
