About Cable Beach

Cable Beach stretches for 22 kilometres along the Kimberley coastline near Broome, making it one of the longest uninterrupted sandy beaches on Australia's northwest coast. The appeal for kiters is direct: flat tidal sand with no rocks, and enough room that you're rarely crowded out. The beach is easy to reach from Broome town centre — well-signposted and a short drive away, with parking available near the main access points. The sheer length of the beach works in your favour; if the main entry area is busy, walk further along the sand and you'll find space. Launching from flat, firm tidal sand is about as straightforward as it gets. No rocks, no reef, nothing to negotiate underfoot. The wide beach face gives plenty of room to rig and sort your lines. The beach profile shifts between low and high tide, so check where the waterline sits before you set up — what's comfortably wide at low water can narrow as the tide comes in. The dry-season trade wind runs S-SSW, roughly 180–210°, arriving side-onshore from the south. April through October is the reliable window, with the trades sitting in the 15–25 knot range on typical days. Side-onshore is a workable angle: you can ride upwind, jump freely, and the beach is always behind you if you need it. The water over the tidal flats is generally shallow, which suits intermediate riders looking to build confidence — worth understanding before you push it hard. The wet season (November through March) brings the NW monsoon, flipping the wind direction and adding a different character to the riding. Less predictable than the dry-season trades, but kiters who time their windows right can find sessions during this period too. Facilities in the area are solid. The Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa is the landmark accommodation right near the beach; RAC Cable Beach Holiday Park works well for those travelling on a budget or with a vehicle full of gear.
