San Pedro is a small Caribbean town at the northern end of Ambergris Caye — Belize's largest island — and it's the country's biggest kitesurf hub by a clear margin. The geography does a lot of the work: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs along the eastern edge of the island, sheltering a shallow lagoon on the west side that offers flat, manageable water for riders of most levels. The wind that drives this spot is the E–ESE trade wind, blowing reliably from November through May, typically in the 15–25 knot range. With a usable kite window covering north through east to south, the easterly trades sit squarely in the middle of the safe riding arc. The lagoon behind the reef is the main riding zone: flat, shallow water sheltered from ocean swell, well-suited to flatwater freestyle and freeride. Ambergris Caye has no road connection to the mainland, so sort your transfer before you arrive — access is by boat or light aircraft from Belize City. Once in San Pedro, the two main launch points are Boca del Rio, a channel at the northern edge of town, and the lagoon side. Boca del Rio is an active channel, so watch for boat traffic when rigging and launching. The lagoon side tends to be quieter. Be mindful of the reef on the eastern edge — if you ride upwind toward the reef line, know where it sits before you go. Both offer lessons and gear rental, which is worth knowing if you're travelling without your own kit or want a local read on conditions first. Checking in with local instructors on your first session is time well spent — they'll know the current state of the lagoon and any traffic patterns to watch. For gear, the 15–25 knot trade wind range typically suits a 9–12m kite depending on your weight. The flat lagoon works well for both twin-tips and directionals. Consistent trade winds, flat water, schools on the ground, and a relaxed Caribbean town to come back to — San Pedro is one of the more complete kitesurf setups in the region.
