Lac Bay is one of the finest flat-water windsurfing and wingfoil lagoons on the planet — a sheltered 700-hectare bay on the southeast coast of Bonaire with turquoise, waist-deep water and a steady northeast-to-east trade wind. That wind blows offshore from the land side of Sorobon Beach, which is what makes the spot uniquely safe: if you fall or lose power, the trade wind carries you back toward shore rather than out to sea. Bonaire's trade winds clock from NE in the dry season (averaging 18–24 knots, December through August) to E in the wetter months, delivering usable flat-water sessions on over 90% of days year-round. Kitesurfing is strictly prohibited throughout Lac Bay — STINAPA Bonaire, which manages the bay as part of the Bonaire National Marine Park and an internationally designated RAMSAR Wetland, prohibits kiting due to the shallow bottom, mangrove ecosystem and seagrass beds. Windsurfing and wingfoiling are the disciplines here. Sorobon Beach on the western shore is the hub: four professional centres operate from the same 2-kilometre sandy strip — Jibe City (the main anchor, with gear for every level), Dunkerbeck Pro Center, Bonaire Windsurf Place and Frans Paradise. Conditions range from beginner-friendly flat water close to shore to open-ocean sailing beyond the reef for advanced riders. The lagoon is warm (28 °C), clear to the sandy bottom and waist-deep far out, making water-starts and gear handling genuinely comfortable. Bonaire hosted PWA World Tour events from 2002 onwards and the 2025 PWA Youth Slalom World Cup, cementing its status as a world-class destination. Lac Bay also holds the largest mangrove forest in the Dutch Kingdom — a UNESCO-protected ecosystem that wraps around the bay's northern and eastern edges.
