About Atins

Atins sits at the mouth of the Rio Preguiças where it meets the Atlantic on the Lençóis Maranhenses coast in Maranhão, northern Brazil. This remote fishing village has earned a genuine reputation as one of the world's top flat-water kite destinations — and when you arrive, you understand why almost immediately. Getting here is part of the adventure. Access comes by boat or 4×4 from Barreirinhas, the nearest town with road connections. This isn't a resort destination — it's a working village that happens to sit on world-class kite terrain, and the remoteness is part of the experience from the moment you set off. The riding area is built around sandbanks and knee-deep lagoons that form along the estuary and coastline. Water depths stay genuinely shallow over the banks — ideal for learning, unhooking, and the kind of relaxed freestyle that flat water encourages. The ocean side of the village offers a different session entirely, with wave riding available when swell and wind align, giving experienced riders a break from the lagoon flat. Wind arrives from the E-NE as a cross-to-onshore flow, running from July through mid-January. Expect 15 to 30 knots during this window — enough range to suit beginners on bigger kites through to experienced riders pushing smaller gear in stronger conditions. The wind arc covers 290° to 110°, and the prevailing E-NE direction sits squarely within it, keeping you in clean position over the lagoon zones. Outside the core season, consistency drops — if you're booking a trip, the July–January window is where the odds sit in your favour. The lagoons are the headline act. Flat, warm, shallow water with consistent wind is a combination that's hard to find and harder to beat. A wipeout here rarely means slamming hard into a sandbank at speed — the forgiving depth gives you room to make mistakes and learn from them. Experienced riders can run technical sessions without constant chop interference; the flat-water quality is genuinely high. On the facilities side, Atins is small but has what you need. Accommodation clusters close to the kite zone: Chalés paradise is roughly 84 metres from the water, Casa Acquamarina and Casa da Praia Atins sit around 160–242 metres. For food, Aperí-Ceia and Ça-Vá Charme Atins are within easy walking distance at around 180 and 238 metres respectively, with Casa de Juja a short stroll further. Atins Kite Boarding operates from about 514 metres — worth stopping in on arrival for a local conditions read. Bar.co rounds out the social side of the evening just over a kilometre away. Pack self-sufficiency. Infrastructure is limited, the village is genuinely remote, and that is precisely the point. Come with what you need, allow time for the access journey, and Atins will more than deliver.
