Lagoa do Peixe sits inside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the southern coast of Rio Grande do Sul, a long, narrow lagoon running roughly parallel to the Atlantic shore south of Tramandaí. The reserve status keeps the surrounding landscape largely untouched — migrating birds, coastal scrub, and long unbroken views in every direction. If you've come to kitesurf, the setting alone is worth the trip. The lagoon's orientation and the regional wind pattern line up well. Strong S-to-SE winds push across the water from the ocean side, and because the lagoon is sheltered from Atlantic swell, those winds arrive without the bump. The result is classic flat-water riding: fast, open, and forgiving on the knees. Winds track through the 180°–0° arc, meaning anything out of the south through east sits squarely in your usable kite window. When a solid S or SE is running, the lagoon turns into a long corridor you can work on a beam reach for a very long time. This kind of riding suits intermediates and up. There's room to build speed, carve wide turns, and practise transitions without constantly watching for a downwind shore. Advanced riders will find it a natural playground for big-radius carving and extended freeride runs. The flat water also gives more experienced beginners a low-bump environment to build water time — though the remoteness and complete absence of on-site facilities make it unsuitable for absolute first-timers who need supervision and backup. On the ground, the reserve setting shapes the experience in practical ways. Because Lagoa do Peixe is a protected natural area, development is minimal and infrastructure is sparse. There are no listed kite schools, gear rental shops, or rescue services at the lagoon. You arrive self-sufficient: pump, repair kit, charged phone, and enough water and food for the session. The lagoon lies south of Tramandaí along the RS coast; confirm current access conditions before you travel, as a UNESCO reserve can carry seasonal restrictions on where you can launch. Launching happens from the lagoon shore rather than the ocean beach — the flat-water riding is in the lagoon, not the surf. Scout your entry point on arrival and walk the shoreline before rigging; shoreline vegetation and soft ground near the water's edge can complicate a self-launch. Bring a ground crew for launch and landing if you can. Because this is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with migratory bird populations, be mindful of any posted nesting zones and seasonal closures at the reserve boundaries.
