Praia do Sono sits on one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in southeast Brazil, straddling the border between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states, a boat ride or a serious trail-hike from the colonial town of Paraty. There are no roads in. The beach is backed by steep Atlantic Forest, the kind that makes it feel like the rest of the world has been left well behind. Getting here takes commitment. Most riders arrive by boat from Paraty — the practical option that also solves the problem of transporting gear. The hiking trail is genuinely scenic but demands real effort with a kite bag on your back. Either way, factor travel time into your day. You want to arrive with room to read the beach before the afternoon wind fills in. That wind comes as a sea breeze off the South Atlantic, tracking S to SE, and it builds in the afternoon. Expect 12 to 18 knots on a typical good day — side-onshore, which gives you a workable launch angle and keeps the riding honest. The usable kite window runs 45° to 225°. This is not a pumping trade-wind destination where you'll be overpowered every session; conditions here are nuanced and you need to pay attention. The setting pushes the riding from functional to genuinely memorable. Atlantic Forest drops almost to the waterline, the water runs clear, and on a good afternoon the whole beach can feel like a private session. That said, remoteness cuts both ways. If conditions deteriorate, your exit options are limited — no road out, no quick bailout. Weigh that before you launch. For the riding itself: intermediates who are solid in their skills will find this works well in good conditions. The side-onshore angle offers some margin, but the lack of easy shore support means you want to be comfortable with self-rescue before you commit. The water is coastal Atlantic — expect chop as the wind builds, cleaner riding in the lower range of the breeze. On the beach, a cluster of small restaurants serves the day-trippers, surfers, and boat visitors who make the journey. A Casa, La Crepe, Laricão, Muvuca, Ondas e Ventos, Restaurante Amendoeira, and Restaurante Caiçara all operate in the area. Cold drinks and a meal after a session are genuinely easy to find — a real bonus for somewhere this remote. Don't expect kite schools or gear rental; Praia do Sono is not that kind of beach. Come self-sufficient. The crowd is mostly surfers and beach-goers, so spatial awareness on the launch matters. Pick entry and exit points away from the main swimming zone and give yourself room. Praia do Sono rewards the rider who plans the approach, arrives early, and isn't relying on shore support.
