About Otres Beach · Sihanoukville

Otres Beach curves along Cambodia's southwest coast in Preah Sihanouk Province, looking out across the Gulf of Thailand roughly 7 km south of Sihanoukville's city centre. The area around 7-Chann sits on a gently sloping shoreline where the tourism buzz of the main Otres strip thins out a little, giving you cleaner sight lines for rigging and launching. The beach faces squarely into the southwest, which means the SW monsoon — running from around May through September at roughly 12 to 20 knots — pushes onshore or side-on depending on exactly where you set up along the arc. That 150°–330° usable kite window covers the conditions you'll see across both main seasons. Later in the year, the northeast wind takes over from around December through March, flipping the orientation to cross-to-offshore — a setup that suits flat-water riders who are comfortable reading their downwind limits before they head out. Water character is a mix: the inner section can offer flat pockets between swells, while further out it has a beach-break character that rewards riders who've already sorted their beach launches and can handle a bit of chop. It's not the same flat-water playground you'll find at other Cambodian spots, but it's manageable for intermediates who know what they're doing. The kite scene here is noticeably less developed than at Kampot. That's the honest trade-off: fewer crowds on the water and a more relaxed vibe, but also less established infrastructure — no dedicated school presence or kite rental setup to speak of. Come self-sufficient with your own gear and a solid rigging routine. Getting here is straightforward. Otres Beach is accessible by tuk-tuk or motorbike from Sihanoukville's central area, and guesthouses along the Otres strip can generally point you toward the 7-Chann stretch. Parking on the beach track is informal. The beach itself is wide enough at low tide to rig without drama, but the usable strip narrows at high tide — time your sessions accordingly. The Small Beach Bar is the known facility on site — a solid spot to refuel between sessions, find shade, and ask locals what the water has been doing lately. Don't expect a kite café with forecast screens; this is a straightforward beach bar with food and cold drinks. Sihanoukville makes a reasonable base if you want to combine kitesurfing with the broader Cambodian coast. Koh Rong and the nearby islands are an easy ferry ride away for rest days, and the Otres area has grown its accommodation and dining options enough that you won't need to venture back into the city for much.
