Kep Thmey sits on a peninsula about 8 kilometres from Kampot town, pointing out into the Gulf of Thailand with Phu Quoc island visible across the water on clear days. It's a straightforward drive from Kampot — follow the coastal road south, and the beach opens up ahead of you. The launch area is a flat, open stretch of sand with shallow water in front, making it easy to wade out and body-drag without immediately hitting depth. The water is the spot's headline feature: warm, flat, and shallow for a solid distance from shore. That combination means you're riding a natural training ground. For beginners, it's forgiving — if you come down hard, you're not going far under. For intermediates looking for smooth freestyle conditions or to work on board skills, the flat water delivers without the chop that mars a lot of Indo-Pacific spots. Wind at Kep Thmey runs in two distinct seasons. May through October brings the southwest trades at around 15–22 knots — the more consistent window and the busiest time on the water. If that feels light for your gear, factor in the orographic boost from Bokor Mountain behind the coast, which can add around 7 knots when conditions align, pushing the effective range into comfortable mid-wind territory. The NE season from December through January flips the direction and steps up the power, with 25–30 knots becoming the norm — better-powered riding, but you'll want to size down accordingly. The usable kite window runs from roughly southeast (120°) to west-northwest (300°), which covers both seasonal wind directions cleanly. Cross-to-onshore conditions predominate, keeping things manageable at launch and giving you reasonable drift if you drop your kite. Two kite schools operate at the beach: Cambodia Kiteboarding and Simple Things. The presence of an IKO-certified school on site means structured tuition is available if you're learning or want a guided introduction to the spot. After a session, accommodation options nearby include Seahorse Resort, Nisai Kampot, and SOKCHEA KAMPOT HOTEL. For food, The Bay, ARVI Restaurant @Amber Kampot, Kampot Cafe, Maxim Café and Bar, and Kampot Seafood & Pepper cover everything from quick lunches to sit-down seafood. The pepper is local and worth the detour — Kampot pepper has a reputation that extends well beyond the kite scene. Kep Thmey isn't a big international circuit stop, and that's part of the appeal. The crowd is thin compared to Thai or Bali spots, the water is warm year-round, and the learning conditions are genuinely good. Come in the southwest season if you want reliability; come in December or January if you want power. Either way, bring sunscreen — the Gulf of Thailand sun at low tide is unforgiving.
