Baía das Gatas sits on the southeast coast of São Vicente, one of the Cape Verde islands, a natural bay sheltered from open Atlantic swell by the headlands that frame it. The result is flat, glassy water that contrasts sharply with the exposed windward shores of the island, which makes it one of the more distinctive kite venues in the archipelago. Getting there typically means a drive out from Mindelo, the main town on São Vicente, roughly 10 kilometres away. The bay is a well-known local destination and easy enough to locate; accommodation at Restaurante Baia Guest House sits under 200 metres from the water, and Atlantic Pearl House is just over 400 metres away if you want to stay right at the spot. The wind is the NNE trade, running cross-offshore at 20 to 28 knots through the season. That direction is exactly why the bay holds flat water: the trades push across rather than funnelling Atlantic swell in from the open ocean. It is reliable, consistent wind, and the bay geometry takes some of the edge off the gusts in a way that makes conditions more manageable than raw trade-wind sailing elsewhere on the island. Cross-offshore is also the thing to understand before you rig up. If you lose power or have a kit failure, the wind takes you away from shore rather than back to the beach. Beginners can kite here, but only with proper supervision and ideally a safety boat on the water. Experienced riders will be comfortable self-managing; newer kiters should not be out there without backup. For riding style, the glassy flat water makes Baía das Gatas a strong match for freestyle and foiling. The bay gives you enough room to get some run going, and the surface stays clean even in the heart of the trade season. There is no kite rental or school infrastructure at the bay itself, so arrive self-sufficient with your own kit.
