About Ponta Leme

Ponta Leme sits on the eastern headland of Baia de Santa Maria, a short distance from the busier Kite Beach that most visitors default to on Sal. If you've outgrown the crowd and want flat water without the traffic, this is where you end up. The geography shapes everything here. The headland juts out on the eastern side of the bay, giving the spot its characteristic cross-offshore wind angle. The trade winds arrive from the north-northeast, but they pass over the island before they reach you — that overland track breaks up the airflow and makes the wind noticeably gustier than what you'd find at a cleaner oceanic exposure. Expect variation. The wind can arrive in lumps and gaps rather than a steady sheet, so you want to stay reactive and keep your body position loose. What the wind loses in consistency, the water makes up for in quality. The lagoon inside the headland produces butter-flat conditions — smooth, fast water that intermediate and advanced riders come here specifically for. High-speed runs across the glassy surface are the main draw. There's significantly less chop than at Kite Beach, which makes it a better venue for dialling in transitions at pace or simply going fast. The cross-offshore angle means offshore is a real vector if something goes wrong. This is not a beginner spot. If you get caught in a lull, tangle a line, or end up with a kite stuck on the water at the wrong moment, the wind direction will not help you back to shore. Come here with reliable water-relaunch skills, a self-rescue plan, and ideally a buddy watching from the beach. Going out solo is possible but not advisable. On the upside, the crowd is lighter than Kite Beach. Fewer kites in the air means more space to work with at launch and in the riding area, which matters on gusty days when everyone needs a bit more room. There are no listed facilities at Ponta Leme itself. Santa Maria is the practical base — gear rental, repair, food, and accommodation are all there. Sort out everything you need before heading to the headland, and bring enough water and a charged phone for the session. The usable kite window runs from 245° through to 25°, covering the westerly, northwesterly, and northerly quadrants. When the trades have a north or north-northeast component, the spot comes into its own. Cape Verde's position in the Atlantic trade wind belt means Sal sees reliable conditions across a good portion of the year, and Ponta Leme rewards the riders who take time to understand its particular character rather than just chasing the nearest flag.
