About Bahía Inglesa

Bahía Inglesa sits on Chile's Atacama coast, about 5 km south of Caldera — a turquoise bay carved into one of the driest landscapes on Earth. The Atacama desert runs almost to the waterline, giving the place a surreal quality: near-zero rainfall, constant sun, and water calm enough to run comfortable flat-water kite sessions across. The bay faces west, capturing the prevailing SW-to-NW winds across its full width, and the main kiting beaches — Playa La Piscina and Playa Las Machas — offer a sheltered, shallow water setup that's forgiving for newer riders. Getting to the water from Caldera is a short drive south along the coast road. The beachfront is compact and accessible; parking is straightforward. Launch from the sand on either Playa La Piscina or Las Machas — both are open beaches with flat terrain around them, which makes setup and self-landing manageable. That said, the beaches draw a healthy tourist and swimming crowd during the November–March season when the wind is most active, so timing your launch with clear water around you is part of the routine here. The wind window runs 210°–330° — SW through NNW. Peak season is November through March, when SW winds typically arrive in the 20–30 kn range: consistent enough to be productive for a range of kite sizes, accessible enough in character to let beginners get time on the water without feeling overpowered. Outside that window, conditions are patchier and less reliable — if kiting is the main reason you're making the trip, the southern hemisphere summer is the window to book. The water is the standout. The bay is genuinely flat and shallow across a wide area — good for building confidence, running transitions without too much drama, or logging clean flat-water hours. The turquoise colour you'll see in photos is real; the Atacama desert backdrop, near-zero humidity, and shelter of the bay all contribute to conditions that look as good as they ride. A wetsuit is worth packing for longer sessions given the cool Pacific water. On hazards: the beach is popular with tourists, swimmers, and other water users during the peak kiting season — this is an active, shared beach, not a dedicated kite spot. Launch and land carefully, be aware of other beach users, and bring serious sun protection. The desert environment means strong sun and near-zero humidity all session long; hydration is not optional. Accommodation and food options cluster around the bay. Domo Camping en Bahia Inglesa and Cabañas Paraíso are among the closest options to the water. Hotel Restaurant Coral de Bahia Inglesa handles both food and lodging. Casa Roots and El Plateao Cocina Regional are solid meal options nearby, and Bar La Playa is on the beachfront. Most of what you need is within walking distance of the water, and Caldera, 5 km north, covers anything else including gear sourcing. The bay also attracts divers, kayakers, and windsurfers, which makes it a workable base if you're travelling with a mixed crew.
