Caldera is a working fishing town on Chile's Atacama coast, roughly 5 kilometres north of the better-known resort area of Bahía Inglesa. Playa Ramada — along with its neighbour Playa Brava — faces southwest into open Pacific exposure, giving this stretch of beach an Atlantic-like quality that sets it apart from the more sheltered bays down the coast. It feels wilder, more raw, and considerably less crowded. The beach itself is wide and open, which is one of its main selling points for kiting. You get room to rig properly, space to work the water, and none of the crowd pressure that builds at more developed spots. The trade-off is that infrastructure here is thin by any standard — there is no kite school on the sand, no gear rental to fall back on. If you are visiting Playa Ramada, you come self-sufficient or you come with someone who is. The kite window runs from 225° through to 355°, covering southwest through to north-northwest. The prevailing wind arrives from the southwest and typically runs 15 to 25 knots during the season, which falls between October and March — spring and summer in the southern hemisphere. Afternoons are generally the productive window, as the inland Atacama desert heats up and draws marine air off the Pacific across the coast. Mornings can be light. Because the beach is more exposed than Bahía Inglesa, conditions can get choppy when the wind builds. That open-ocean character is part of the appeal for experienced riders, but it means this spot suits intermediates and above who are comfortable in less predictable water. Beginners would likely be better positioned starting at a more sheltered location nearby and graduating here once they have the basics solid. One thing to prepare for regardless of the season: cold water. The Atacama coast runs on the Humboldt Current, and the Pacific here is genuinely cold. Pack a wetsuit. It is a functional base, not a resort. Caldera and Playa Ramada pair well with Bahía Inglesa for anyone spending time in the Atacama region. The two spots sit close together and offer meaningfully different characters: Bahía Inglesa is more sheltered and tourist-facing, Playa Ramada more open and unvarnished. With a few days in the area and decent conditions, running both makes sense.
