About Premantura
Premantura sits at the southernmost tip of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, where the land tapers to a rocky cape and the Adriatic opens up on both sides. It's a small, quiet village, but the spot — anchored around Camping Stupice at the cape — carries a big reputation: northern Croatia's most popular destination for kiteboarders during Bora season. Word travels fast in the kite world, and this place earned its following. Getting here from Pula is straightforward — follow the main road south down the peninsula until it terminates near the cape. Camping Stupice sits right at the water's edge and serves as the natural base. The geography works in your favour: two bays flank a small peninsula, giving you shelter options depending on which direction the wind is running that day. If one bay is too choppy or the angle is off, you walk five minutes and set up on the other side. The Bora is the main event. This katabatic northeast wind originates in the mountains and funnels down to hit this exposed cape at considerable force — typically 20–40 knots, running from October through April. For the southeast-facing coast, the Bora is side-offshore: fast, flat water, clean conditions, and absolutely no margin for error if something goes wrong. The wind's offshore character means it won't return you to shore if you lose your gear or your edge. Stay well within reach of land, carry a plan B, and don't launch unless you're confident in self-rescue. Summer changes the character of the spot entirely. The Maestral — a northwest thermal wind — typically delivers 12–18 knots and blows side-onshore through the warmer months. These are the sessions you'd recommend to a capable intermediate: consistent wind, forgiving angle, manageable water. It's still not a beginner's beach, but the risk profile is significantly different from a full Bora day. The Adriatic water around Premantura is clear and relatively protected in both bays, tending toward flat to mildly choppy rather than open-ocean swell.
