About Ston / Mali Ston Bay

Ston and Mali Ston sit at the landward end of the Pelješac peninsula in Croatia's Dubrovnik-Neretva County, connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus that separates two bodies of water. The bay here is one of the most sheltered kite spots in the southern Adriatic — a flat, shallow lagoon set inside a working oyster-farming bay, with the kind of water clarity that makes you want to stop riding and just stand there. Getting here, you're arriving either from Dubrovnik to the south or from the Split direction to the north, turning onto the peninsula at Ston. The town is small and easy to orient in; launching is from the bay-side shoreline where the lagoon opens up. Crowds are not an issue — this is genuinely one of the quieter spots compared to Viganj further up the peninsula, and you're unlikely to share a launch with a field of riders even on a solid summer afternoon. Wind runs in two distinct modes. The NW Maestral is the primary summer driver — a classic Adriatic afternoon thermal that typically delivers 12–20 knots, building through the morning and holding into the early evening. It sits comfortably inside the spot's usable window, which runs roughly 225° to 45°, and that same window accommodates the NE Bora that arrives in spring and autumn. The Bora tends to be gustier and more abrupt in its arrival; pay attention when the weather pattern shifts, especially in the transitional seasons. The water is where this spot makes its case. Flat, shallow, and crystal clear — forgiving for riders working on technique and a good canvas for freestyle. Falls are less costly here than at exposed open-coast spots, and the surface stays smooth even at reasonable wind speeds. The oyster-farming infrastructure means there are rope and stake structures in parts of the bay; get your bearings from shore before you head out and keep clear of any marked farming zones. Onshore, Ston offers more than most kite towns its size. The historic salt pans and ancient city walls that ring the hillside above the bay give it a character that's genuinely unusual at a kite spot. For food after your session, Kapetanova Kuća and Bota Šare are well-regarded for local shellfish and seafood straight from the bay. Stagnum, Bakus, Kod Baće, Maestral, Natura stone, and Sorgo Palace round out the restaurant options around the water. Patria and Placa are the bar-café choices when you want something lower-key. Less crowded than its neighbours, historically rich, and with flat water that rewards both learners and freestyle riders — Ston is a spot worth the detour if you're working your way along the Dalmatian coast.
