L'Almanarre sits on a long, narrow strip of land at the southern edge of the Hyères coast, pressed between salt lagoons and the open bay formed by the Presqu'île de Giens. The setting is immediately striking: five kilometres of open beach facing south into the bay, with Port Cros island sitting offshore and the peninsula curving around to create a broad, protected riding area on the French Mediterranean coast. Access runs along the Route du Sel, the salt road that skirts the lagoons. The kite zone sits between gates 16 and 21 — a defined stretch that opens to riders from April through October. Outside that seasonal window the area returns to its protected status, so confirming access before you travel is worth doing, particularly in early spring or late autumn. The bay faces south-southwest, which means Mistral and westerly winds blow onshore across the full fetch. When the Mistral is running — typically in the 15 to 30 knot range — you get consistent wave chop rolling across the whole beach. It's not a heaving swell spot, but the bay's geometry delivers clean, organised wind and plenty of room to ride. Intermediate and advanced riders find this the sweet spot: reliable power, engaging conditions, enough margin to push things. Easterly wind is a different story entirely. When the wind clocks east, the bay goes flat and conditions turn offshore for the kite zone — gusts can exceed 45 knots. That's expert-only territory: fast flat water and serious power, but no room for error if you lose upwind ground. Only commit to an east-wind session if your skills are genuinely up to it. The five-kilometre beach gives you space to spread out, though peak summer weekends see it busy. Multiple kite schools operate at the spot with professional instructors, making it a proper venue for lessons or coached progression in a solid wind environment. After a session, Grand Baie is right there at roughly 175 metres from the beach. L'Envie, Côté Sud, La Jeannette, and Brasserie du Provençal are all within 400 metres; La Rascasse and La Mandra are a short walk further along. For accommodation, La Bergerie is about 1.8 kilometres away; Hôtel La Bastide and La Pinède Bleue are around three kilometres out. Spring and early autumn typically deliver the strongest Mistral windows with fewer crowds than midsummer. The usable wind arc runs from 150° to 310° — SSW through west to WNW — covering the onshore directions that make this bay worth timing your trip around.
