Pont des Basses sits at the southern end of the long beach arc connecting Canet-en-Roussillon with Saint-Cyprien, in the Pyrénées-Orientales département of Occitanie. The name comes from the low bridge that marks the transition between the open Mediterranean beach and the lagoon tucked behind the dunes — and that bridge is your landmark for finding the kite zone. The spot is SE-facing, which puts it squarely in the path of the summer thermal cycle that builds along this stretch of coast. From late spring through early autumn, a reliable S–SE breeze typically picks up through the morning and can run anywhere from 12 to 25 knots by midday — onshore, clean, and forgiving enough that beginners and intermediates get the most out of this place. Duokite - School De Kitesurf/Wing operates here, so tuition is available directly on the water if you need it. The riding area splits into two distinct characters. On the seaward side you have open Mediterranean water with a modest chop — not a wave spot, but enough texture to keep things interesting when the thermal is pumping. Behind the beach, the lagoon offers flat water that is noticeably calmer: ideal for learning, body-dragging practice, or anyone who wants to link turns without fighting swell. For newer kiters in summer, the lagoon is the draw. Winter changes the picture completely. The Tramontane — a strong NW wind — does blow through here, but it arrives from a side-offshore angle and it can push you away from land faster than you expect. Unless you are fully confident in your upwind ability and self-rescue, winter sessions at this spot carry a genuine risk. It is experienced-rider territory when the Tramontane is running, and that is not a label to take lightly on an offshore wind. Access is straightforward: the Pont des Basses bridge is a clear waypoint between the two towns, and beach access along this stretch of coast is easy. For food and a drink after riding, there is a solid range of options nearby. Bistrot le Toit Bleu offers a roof-terrace setting. Chez Muima and Como en Casa cover local flavours. Fresh Burritos and Flamingo sit on the casual end. Crêperie bretonne de la Colline brings a Breton note to this firmly Catalan stretch of coast. Camping Ma Prairie and Corner Hôtel handle accommodation if you are staying more than a day. Summer here is about as accessible as Mediterranean kiting gets: reliable onshore thermals, flat lagoon water in the lee, and a school on site. Winter is for those who know exactly what they are getting into.
